Since unveiling their first collections of hand woven floor rugs with the launch of Armadillo&Co, collaborators Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst have been continuing to create new lines. “The Armadillo is slowly exploring the house!” laughs Jodie. “We’re really excited to be working with new communities of artisans in India who specialise in finer weaves for our new smaller items. The intricate work they can do is incredible,” she enthuses.
Sally explains what really works for them with the Table Top pieces. “We love that with the weaves up close and so tactile on the table you can really see and feel the artistry that goes into them, and the organic irregularities that give them so much personality. Every piece is a true original.”
Indeed, the placemats and runners manage to balance rustic with refined. Sitting on any table the look is simple, but stunning. Just as their floor rugs are woven from all natural fibres including wool, cotton and jute, the new items utilise handsome and hardy hemp, and are all inhabited by the same spirit of the classical, natural, textural and ethical that defines Armadillo&Co’s philosophical approach.
“The feel is humble and honest, but always very beautiful,” says Sally. “Just like our artisans!” quips Jodie. But their commitment to the villages of Uttar Pradesh, where their goods are made, is very serious. “We are Fair Trade, we advocate against child labour and we always give back to our communities in India”, Jodie says modestly.
