Linen Cottage Cushions with Soft Edges and Cosy Corners
Our Cottage Cushions have arrived, and they are now available to shop online.
Cushions have always felt like a natural companion to our bedding, and we wanted to take our time getting them right. The result is a collection made from the same French flax linen you already know, finished with gentle details and designed to bring a soft, lived-in ease to the bedroom and beyond.
This is a new chapter for us, and we are so pleased to share it with our community.
The Inspiration
This collection began with a feeling many of you will know: stepping into a cosy cottage where nothing quite matches, and everything belongs.
Cushions gathered over the years are piled softly on a window seat. Linens in different stripes and colours are layered on the bed, worn soft with washing. Little treasures sit on every surface, collected along the way. None of it was chosen to match, yet somehow it all works together in a way that feels deeply personal. It is the quiet beauty of a life well lived.
That is the feeling we wanted to capture. Each Cottage Cushion has been designed to sit easily alongside the cushions and bedding you already have, so your collection can grow gently over time, one piece at a time, until it feels entirely your own.
Three Sizes to Layer
Each Cottage Cushion comes in three sizes, designed to be mixed together on a bed, a sofa or an armchair.
Square, 50 x 50cm. The foundation of any arrangement. Beautiful on its own, or as the backdrop to smaller pieces.
Lumbar, 30 x 50cm. Lovely on an armchair or the sofa, or in pairs in front of the pillows on a bed.
Long Lumbar, 30 x 70cm. A new size for us, and our pride and joy. It is made to sit across the middle of a bed or a sofa and draw the whole arrangement together.
The Details at the Edge
It is often the smallest details that make a piece feel considered. Across the collection you will find two edge finishes, and varying them is part of the joy of putting cushions together.
Piped. A fine line of contrast piping gives a tailored finish and keeps an arrangement from feeling too uniform. Our new Cobalt is piped in sap green, our Sandstone Farmhouse Stripe in white, and a simple white cushion in indigo ticking, so each piece carries a gentle echo of another.
Ruffled. A soft ruffle frames the cushion with a relaxed, cottage feel. It brings a little romance to a bed or sofa without ever feeling fussy.
Every cushion is made from 100% French flax linen that is OEKO-TEX certified and European Flax certified, and all of our prints are designed by hand by Jacinta, our founder and textile designer.
Each one closes with an invisible zip, so discreet it can be hard to find. Jacinta specifies one particular high quality zip brand and makes sure our manufacturers use it, because a cushion should never be let down by a zip that breaks or jams.
Kapok Inside
Every Cottage Cushion comes with a kapok insert, so it arrives ready to bring straight into your home.
Kapok is a natural fibre that comes from the kapok plant. We chose it as an environmentally friendly alternative to the polyester inserts you typically find in cushions. It reflects the same care we put into choosing our linen: natural materials, consciously chosen.
Something New: Four New Colours
Alongside the colours you already know, the collection introduces four new ones.
Sap Gingham. A fresh green check that is bright and fun, yet earthy at the same time. Green is Jacinta’s favourite colour, and it shows.
Ochre Gingham. The same relaxed check in a warm golden tone.
Sap. A soft solid green, finished on the square with French Blue contrast piping.
Cobalt. A new mid blue, finished on the square with sap green contrast piping.
Made to Sit With Your Bedding
The Cottage Cushions were designed as part of the Salt Living family, not apart from it. Many are made in the same colours and stripes as our bedding, including French Blue, French Blue Thin Stripe, Indigo, Kelp, Sandstone, Sandstone Stripe, Sandstone Farmhouse and White Farmhouse.
That means if you already sleep in Salt Living linen, you have a ready-made starting point. A few cushions in a matching or neighbouring colour can make a bed you love feel refreshed, without starting again. It is the way we have always hoped you would shop with us: slowly, building a collection over time that feels like your own.
Styling Your Bed
Jacinta likes to keep the cushions on a bed symmetrical, which gives it a calm, balanced feel. Once your pillows are standing against the bedhead, choose one of these arrangements to sit in front.
- A pair of lumbars. Simple, neat and easy to live with.
- A pair of long lumbars. A longer, more generous line across the bed.
- A pair of squares with a pair of lumbars in front. The most layered look, with two sizes working together.
- One long lumbar, centred. A more minimal look, and very nice on its own.
Let it feel relaxed rather than perfect. Linen looks its best a little lived-in.
Mixing and Matching on the Sofa
These cushions are just as at home in the living room. A lumbar sits beautifully on an armchair, and a long lumbar in the middle of a two or two and a half seater sofa ties the whole arrangement together. Add squares at either end and mix your edges, pairing piped with ruffled.
Jacinta’s Styling Tips
- Vary sizes, edges and colours. A balance of different shapes, sizes and edges is what makes an arrangement feel collected rather than matched.
- Aim for around three fabrics across the whole bed. Count your bedding and cushions together. Jacinta finds three colours/stripes a nice balance, while one or two can feel a little flat. A few more is fine, as long as everything is toning. It's all a matter of personal taste afterall, always trust your instinct.
- Start with a hero cushion. For a neutral scheme, begin with a striped piece such as our Sandstone Farmhouse Stripe, then pick up one of its stripe colours in plain chambray, such as Indigo or white or sandstone, or if your chosen hero is White Farmhouse Stripe, then try mixing in Kelp.
- Let contrast piping add interest. A piped edge is a gentle way to introduce a contrast colour to the mix, without letting it take over. Its all about percentages when adding a complimentary colour. The percentage of area it covers should be low. Think "a hint"!
- Give the eye somewhere to rest. A simple white or sandstone cushion creates a calm pause, and a detail like indigo ticking piping keeps it from feeling plain.
Final Note
We believe everyone has a decorator within them, and our hope is that these cushions give you the confidence to play, layer and create a space that feels beautifully yours.
