How to Style

~ Layering guidance: The possibilities are endless, 2 cushions on a bed infront of pillows looks great. Either 2 squares, 2 lumbars or even 2 lumbars. The long lumbar also works well on its own infront of your pillows. Or for a bolder look, co-ordinate 2 lumbars infront of 2 squares. Create a set of 3 cushions of varying sizes and edges! Have fun with it and let your instincts guide your decisions. We are always here to help if you are unsure!

~ Let the edge detail do the coordinating: A piped or gusseted edge in a contrast colour is the easiest way to pull a second tone into the room. Pick that piping colour up in a second cushion elsewhere on the bed.

~ Give every stripe a different partner: A stripe looks best next to something with a different rhythm, not another stripe the same width. Try a narrow stripe against a ticking, or a stripe against a gingham, and let a light tone sit beside a dark one, a dull shade beside something brighter. Save the colour wheel trick for your one true accent cushion: take your cue from the room's main colour and choose its opposite for a small, deliberate hit of contrast.

~ Let the room join in: An armchair upholstered in a stripe or gingham that makes you smile, a bedside lamp with a shade that has real character rather than a plain white one. Let the cushions be the starting point, not the whole room.

Meet the Founder

Together with my parents, Carol and Steve, we opened Salt Living in early 2015 - and it’s been our greatest joy ever since.

My days are spent working on Salt Living or moving between home in Coffs Harbour and our Gold Coast warehouse. When not working I'll either be spending time with my son, frolicking in the sea, painting or deep in a Pinterest rabbit hole, absorbing all the beautiful tones, textures, and interiors that inspire me.

But one of my greatest joys is linen — and the quiet ritual of returning home to a bed layered with freshly laundered sheets and a fluffy, crisp duvet.

Our Story

Cottage Cushions

There's a particular kind of room that comes together slowly, a cushion added here, a colour picked up there, until one day it just looks right. That's the spirit behind Cottage Cushions. We wove the stripes, ginghams and chambrays in this collection to sit easily against almost anything else in the Salt Living range, because we know most of our customers aren't starting from scratch. They're layering onto a bed or sofa they already love.

Every cushion carries a real design detail rather than a plain seam. A ruffled edge leans into a softer, more playful cottage feel. A piped or gusseted edge brings structure, often finished in a contrasting colour that gives the eye something unexpected to land on. That contrast detail does double duty. It's also the easiest place to take your cue from when you're coordinating this cushion against others in the collection, or against a colour from elsewhere in the range. The fabric itself is yarn-dyed before it's ever woven, which is why the colour runs true through the thread rather than sitting on the surface, and why it only mellows and softens with time instead of fading unevenly.

Customers tell us this is often where they start, a cushion or two, to test a colour before committing to a full reversible quilt or duvet, and that the quality holds up exactly the way we'd want it to. We're a small, family-run business, so when you write in to ask which stripe pairs best with your existing linen, you're genuinely talking to someone who knows the range inside out, not reading from a script.

Does the cushion come with an insert?
Yes. Our Ruffled, Gusset and Piped cushions all include either a feather insert or an environmentally friendly Kapok insert, so there's nothing extra to source. Kapok is a natural, plant based fibre, soft underhand and a gentler choice than synthetic fill. Our feather inserts are RDS certified. RDS certification ensures that down and feathers come from birds raised according to strict animal welfare standards with traceable supply chains.
What sizes are available?
Square (50x50cm), Lumbar (30x50cm) and Long Lumbar (30x70cm).
How do I know which colours to choose?
Our colour mix and match guide is a great place to start if you love layering. If you'd rather talk it through, our customer support team is always happy to help, give us a call and we can guide you through combinations that'll suit your space.
Will more designs be added to this collection?
Yes. This Cottage Collection currently centres on our woven stripes, gingham and yarn-dyed chambrays. Our quiet, considered colours and textures never go out of style. Behind the scenes, Jacinta has spent the year designing colourful new patterns to develop this collection even further, aiming to reveal them by Christmas.
What's the fabric, and is it certified?
Premium 100% French flax linen, woven between 170 and 190gsm, the same quality used across our full range. It's European Flax and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, tested and verified safe for your home from the first wash onward.
